First Florida Capitol Build Day at Cascades Park, in honor of TLH Bicentennial

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - In honor of Tallahassee’s Bicentennial, state and local leaders gathered at Cascades Park to construct a replica of Florida’s First Capitol on Saturday.

Dozens of volunteers came together to reconstruct the log cabin originally built in 1824. The event celebrated the founding of the capital city in 1821.

Florida Secretary of State, Cord Byrd, said building the replica is important because it tells the story of Florida.

“People often look at Miami, Orlando, Tampa, the big cities and often ask why Tallahassee,” Byrd said. “And it was because at that point in time, it was the midway point between Pensacola and St. Augustine.”

Saturday marked the third opportunity this month for community members to participate in the Big Bend Habitat for Humanity project.

Byrd also stated that the replica will be acknowledged during a ceremony in November to commemorate the first meeting of the Florida Legislature.
